HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL #8 : WHAT IS A PUBLIC?

Human Rights Film Festival (HRFF) is an annual film festival and its 8th installment will be held from December 06-11, 2010 in Kino Europa (Zagreb) and Art-kino Croatia (Rijeka). The Festival is run by two prominent Croatian independent cultural organizations – Multimedia Institute and Culture Development Association „CDA“ (both organizations being publicly most visible for their respective venues: net.cultural club MaMa and club Mochvara). Our partner in Rijeka is Filmaktiv.

The winner at HRFF-short-review competition is Tamara Kolarić for her review of Christian Petzold’s “Jerichow”. Runner-ups are ex aequo Domagoj Mihaljević, Dora Levačić and Stipe Radić.

Our programme at the Human Rights Day begins with the discussion on the solidarity of the excluded, while the films depict the struggle to get the right to have rights and the complexities of a life in a world where working place as fixed category has become doubtable.

Essay by Maroje Mrduljaš dealing with the broader cultural implications of the gentrification of Cvjetni trg in Zagreb. A case being the prime example of the construction-boom in Zagreb and Croatia, restructuring both the urban and the political landscape at large scale.

DAY 3: ON RIGHTS & DREAMS

The third festival-day will focus on the Right to the City. Exhibition documenting the struggle for public space in Zagreb will be opened, and we organize a discussion related to that. Movies shown today will sketch 3 different geographical setups (Norway, Japan, Ethiopia) of survival within the new brave world.
